i'm just a zipcode man

i've got my house and i'll stay in if i can

i have too many cds. (again.)
[music] it's raining headphones!
[info]barbed_whispers
UGHHHHH why can't i be a normal member of my generation and prefer digital music to cds? i have too many cds. i can't really enjoy an album if i don't get the physical cd, because i play all my music on shuffle because it's mostly background noise. but actual cds get played and played and played and i fall head over heels in love. (for instance: i downloaded the bell horses album the day it dropped on amie street, listened to it once, really liked it, and didn't listen to it again until i bought the actual cd, which has not left my car's cd player since i got it.) (that album is really fucking good, check it out. it sounds like music that would have played at the bronze ♥)

while packing, i put all of the random cds that were floating around my apartment into the gigantic cd case i have and it was full. completely full, with a lot of mix cds double and triple stacked. and some cds in my car. and some cds hanging out elsewhere. and i said "SELF! you cannot buy ANY MORE CDS until you fix this problem!" except then i went to park ave last week and bought, uh, four new cds. (new albums from pearl jam, olp, say anything, and mike doughty, with a bonus free say anything lp and free mike doughty album that i already have and therefore gave to [info]momebie.) fuck. fuck fuck fuck.

i feel bad throwing out cds (although i threw out a stack of cds yesterday- trust me, they were crap), and i could just get rid of all the old mixes i made in college, but...so wasteful. does anybody want some old mix cds? i never did tracklistings, just dates or sometimes themes. so surprise mix cds! maybe i should do a holiday card + a mix cd. hmmm. let's figure this out WITH SCIENCE!

(she gave me H.)

meiko - how lucky we are: this is possibly my favorite song on her album. it belongs on my Common Threads playlist (which is where all the best music lives) (except i don't actually have a Common Threads playlist. i need to fix this.)
my chemical romance - headfirst for halos: i am absolutely in love with the energy in this song.
fall out boy - hand of god: which is it- the boy who writes the songs or the boy who's in them?
our lady peace - happiness and the fish: i can't hear this song (or anything on this album) without being transported back to when i was 16 and spending a stupid amount of time on a bus in europe with a bunch of crazy people ♥
fred lives - hey brother: saddest wrock song ever, Y/Y? (trufax: i almost cried at the last show cos it caught me off-guard.)
the fratellis - henrietta: i can't help but dance when i hear this.
regina spektor - hotel song: this is totes my favorite regina song, and i couldn't bear to delete it from the H playlist.

Comment to this post and I will (try to) give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

Wee Giraffes: they are just so CUTE! ::smishes their little faces::

Music: i could talk about music all day every day and bore the pants off of every single person in the world, i swear. i think the thing i love most about music is that it is pure magic to me. i have screwed around with music my whole life, and i am reasonably intelligent, but i honest-to-god have no idea how these sounds come together to make something that can make me feel so much. (thing i love second most: indie rock boys. IT'S A SICKNESS.)

The Cave of Wonders: one time at a party, i somehow convinced my bff to wear an abu hat (it was a little fez that belonged to a doll someone gave her) and pretend to fly around the apartment on a magic kitchen rug and sing a whole new world. this is what i think of whenever we refer to my apartment as the cave of wonders. (i also think about how if you touch my lamp my house will melt.)

Wizard Rock: nvfje here's the thing- these kids are not playing music so they can be famous or rich or surrounded by groupies. these kids are busting their asses to make music and tour the country because it's what they love to do. it is like dumping the indie scene in a brita filter! also, i absolutely love that they write music about BOOKS. sometimes i get really fed up with regular music because i don't give a shit about love, so it's good that people are writing songs that i can relate to.

Moats: I HAVE A MOAT!! it lets me pretend that i live in a castle like a real knight. also, i thought i heard raptors upstream a couple of weeks ago. it was pretty terrifying.

so, let me know if you want a letter or five things. and if for some reason there are other things you want me to ramble on about, let me know :P

it is possible that i had too much caffeine today.

-i got new glasses! they are super-cute! i am taking them back to the store tomorrow because they are making me insane! (the arms are pretty wide and completely cut off my peripheral vision and it is FREAKING ME OUT.) i am going to get the first pair that i liked, but i don't know if i want them in black or silver. (my life is VERY INTERESTING.)

-GMAIL IS MAKING ME VERY CRANKY MAKE IT STOP ARGH. i have comments and links and things i am supposed to be dealing with tonight and IT WON'T WORK. apparently it is something to do with the latest firefox release? idk, but i want it to stop :/

-this is going to come as a big surprise (especially if you know how much of a shallow freak i can be), but my favorite character on fringe is not peter. i mean, i love him, and not just cos he's played by an actor i used to have a creepy shrine to. but he's not my favorite. astrid is. she is made of pure win, you guys! and she is very pretty! and i just love her! and the girl who plays her is coming to d*c yay! i don't imagine that i will care enough about this show to attend any panels, but it still makes me excited haha.

-OH MY GOD VIXY IS NOT WORKING EITHER. internet, pls stop hating me D: i sacrificed (...hee) several hours this week watching videos so i could rip some stuff, and {s notwuhking! >:| >:| >:|

-i am reading this REALLY AWESOME book right now. it is a handbook to luck and it is by cristina garcia and i don't know how to describe it. it is regular fiction, and it follows the lives of three people (a boy from cuba, a girl from iran, and a girl from el salvador) as they grow up. and whatnot. i liked its cover ages ago, and i am finally getting around to reading everything on my list, so i took this out of the library and said "holy shit this sounds stupid" and i fully expected to hate it but HER WRITING. SO GOOD. bfewwbs i am really enjoying it. i was almost sad to spend my morning gossipping with my boys instead of reading. ("almost" only cos these two particular boys always bring me the best gossip.)

-speaking of gossip, it appears that someone at work has started a rumor about me wanting to date one of the boys. (someone came up to me and told me that he was very shy and i therefore need to be more assertive. !!! i should have assertively shoved my foot up his ass.) i don't really have a problem with the rumor, cos lord knows i start worse rumors all the time, but we can't figure out who started the rumor, so it is driving me crazy. starting rumors is MY job, dammit! (as a sidenote, i only start completely false and ridiculous rumors. i gossip about some true stuff, but it's always stuff that is basically common knowledge that just hasn't made the rounds yet. i never bring actual facts into my trufax rumors, unless they are completely taken out of context, such as "those two were both 'OUT SICK' yesterday. WHAT A COINCIDENCE! nudge nudge wink wink!")

-back to books: just finished everlost by neal shusterman. i can't tell if i read a lot of books about the afterlife, or if books about the afterlife are just really common. either way, this was a book about the afterlife. really interesting concept, mostly interesting characters, fairly uninteresting story. would probably read a sequel though.

-now some music: okay, besides the INSANE amount of patd i've been watching on youtube, i've been listening to a lot of mason jennings, jessie baylin, and meiko. and the usual stuff. and i'm waiting on pins and needles for matt nathanson to announce his tour. (if he doesn't come to orlando with jack's mannequin, i am going to death cab instead, assuming there are still tickets whenever this whole this gets sorted out.) allegedly (according to some random youtube user, YES THIS IS MY LIFE) jenny's album is coming out in may, which is mostly awesome, but means fulfilling my creeper quota for the year is gonna be hard cos there's no way i can fly up there in may for a cd release party. sadface! buttttt that means (a) summer tour! summer! the glorious time when i can take gratuitous days off of work to travel the southeast for shows! and (b) bess and allie will have released their eps and can maybe accompany her! oh! unrelatedly! my favorite music magazine is baaaaaack! at least on the internets! oh chart, i've missed you. (yeah, my favorite music magazine is canadian. what of it?) and wrock this weekend! which is extra good because i have basically done nothing the past three weekends besides sit on my couch and watch tv/movies.

-lately i have been filled with the almost irresistable urge to go to tom sawyer island and be a jackass. please tell me someone else has this urge and wants to accompany me.

i feel like i have been voicing the same two complaints every winter since i was 19, so here they are: this house is drafty and my parents do not believe in heat. (no lie, my mom turned it down to 60 last night because otherwise her bedroom would get way too hot. !!! when she told me they sleep better with it that cold, i pointed out that they only sleep better because their bodies slip into comas to conserve energy.) i am trying to convince them that we should do christmas somewhere tropical next year because i am baby and i freely admit it.

(my brother is at the giants game tonight. !!! HOW IS THAT HUMANLY POSSIBLE? i am getting frostbite just THINKING about it!)

(and my mom has come out against fob. she made me change the playlist during tonight's card game because she couldn't take it anymore, heh.)

(oh and i heard this really awesome song in hollister yesterday but the employees didn't know who it was and my phone couldn't id it and the lyrics i remembered were completely unuseful. this is especially annoying since i know hollister almost exclusively plays bands that i love. it was something about the radio! argh!)

in less whiny news, i have won $11, eaten at surf taco, gotten pecan cups from nana, and downloaded a shit-ton of movies since i got home. \o/

anyway, where are all the end-of-the-year surveys? and what the hell am i doing for my 2009 goals? and why does ginger ale make me burp so much?

typing from bed is SO HARD. why haven't i moved my laptop back to my desk yet?

ANYWAY.

books: happy birthday or whatever by annie choi was pretty disappointing, especially since it has been on my to read list for ages. i am tearing through into thin air by jon krakauer though, even though it looked super-intimidating.

movies: watched robin hood: men in tights last night. nearly died laughing. why is there not more cary elwes in the world? watched wristcutters: a love story tonight. i had trouble watching the beginning, but i liked the rest and the end put a big dumb grin on my face. also: patrick fugit! ilu! (he was why i downloaded it, actually. i'm glad he was in it, cos otherwise i would not have touched this movie with a ten foot pole.) next up: ghost world!

music: i am so not linking from bed, but amazon has jessie baylin's album up for 99 cents today. they also have a free album called P IS FOR PANDA with a mix of artists, including one local boy that i love. and idek how this happened, but i downloaded the album for a brooklyn girl band whose name i can't even remember now because i couldn't get music/videos to stream and they sounded interesting. i am not allowed near amazon anymore because i will download too much music which will be bad because i already have too much music, for realz.

internet: i still hate the new lj profile pages. i have a twitter, but it's mostly for watching semi-famous people. (my username is weesaw.) y'all can count as semi-famous, so who's on twitter? i think i am ready to rename my lj. now i just need to get around to buying a rename token. eventually. uh.

let's not talk about the obvious.
[etc] dftba!
[info]barbed_whispers
you guys! you guys, i watched robin hood: prince of thieves last night. it was so good and so bad ALL AT ONCE. there were parts where i literally said out loud "am i watching a parody of robin hood, or did i download the real thing?" and yet it filled my cold dead heart with such love, i can't even. (also it's funnier if you think of every alan rickman character as snape.) (except the metatron. keep snape the fuck out of dogma, plskthx.) (seriously though, did kevin costner not even bother pretending to have an accent? why do i love that man so much?)

also i went to park ave today and bought cds in honor of my new favorite holiday: NOT YET FIRED DAY! (as an aside, park ave is quite possibly my hands down favorite thing about orlando. they give me free concerts!) anyway, i got conor oberst's cd cos it came with a free concert ticket and i wanted to go see him anyway, and i got the only doughty cd i was lacking (skittish / rockity roll). for some reason when people go solo they still get sorted with their former bands, even though i really doubt people are still looking for soul coughing discs. random! (and on the not fired front: who the fuck knows? it might be that she just hasn't hired someone new yet, or it might be that we're not getting fired. we did get yelled at, and someone did try to throw me under the bus, and i did cop a serious attitude later because the new solution to the work not getting done is to make us record everything we do in about 18 places. because if i can't manage to do my most basic job functions, i can totally remember to initial 18 notebooks saying so!)

anyway, this is the best (unintentional?) nerdfighter comic ever, y'all.

spam: it's what's for dinner.
[bandom] bleat for me!
[info]barbed_whispers
funny coincidence: i was talking about sweet last night, and how the beastie boys sampled "ballroom blitz" (it's in "hey ladies" btw), and then i was watching the rest of wayne's world tonight and guess what cassandra's band plays at the end! hah, so random.

(i promise i am done for the night. i am going to watch another movie and go to sleep now, yaaaay.)

i need to close some tabs.

01. portland is now on the list! (i am such an easy sell, you guys.)

02. i will never not find this hilarious, for realz.

03. depending on where you live, you could start voting TOMORROW! you should do this if your place of residence allows it, because a LOT of new people registered this year and 11/04 is going to be absolutely ridiculous. go here to find out more about when and where you can vote. (and don't forget- as soon as you vote, the campaign calls will stop!)

04. i read another bandom primer and now i want excessively angsty panic! fic. like, angst that can rival old school lotr rps, which was the angstiest fandom to ever exist, ever. why do you guys do this to me? (also read a jonas brothers primer. i have been avoiding the jonas brothers because i really fear that i will love them like burning, so clicking that was maybe not my best idea ever.) trufax: i love primers. a lot. like, a lot a lot. pls link me to more primers.

05. allison weiss!! so awesome! jenny recced her, and we all know jenny can't be wrong! but she really is super awesome, and ALSO a southern girl, so maybe i will actually get to see her play music! unlike the girl singers i love who are living in ny, with the notable exception of ingrid!

06. speaking of ingrid, her new cd is SO GOOD. and she has a twitter! and i am even more in love with dan romer than i was before! yay!

07. the blow - parentheses (.mp3)

08. i don't know what to reeeeeead. i requested three books from the library, so i don't want anything insane, but i need something to bring with me to work tomorrow :/ i'll probably just grab the cheese monkeys.

09. uh, GIP! (this is what happens when i basically don't leave my room for 48 hours. weeeeeeeeeee!) (and i saved it without the text, in case it is necessary to anyone's existence. just sayin!)

Step 1: Put your MP3 player on random.
Step 2: Post the first line from the first 35 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing the song.
Step 3: Let everyone guess what song and artist the lines come from.
Step 4: Bold the songs when someone guesses correctly. (Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING!)

btw, I do not think this is an accurate snippet of my music collection. In case you were wondering. )

-i am still sick :( the antibiotics were working, and then they stopped working, and my throat is all achey and i think i have a fever again. arghhhhhhhhh.

-finished nobody's princess by esther friesner. liked it a fair amount, want the next one cos it takes place on my boat. woohoo, books based on mythology?

-matt nathanson is coming back here this fall! yaaaaaaaaaay! i am v. excited, you guys.

-AND right before that show, i am going to an indian wedding!!! i have wanted to go to an indian wedding for YEARS, to the point where i once asked hita to hook me up with one of her cousins. so YAY.

-jenny has been performing new music at her shows! check out this awesome song, which i have been listening to kind of a lot. oh jenny. (ALSO, i bought the cd, and her mom wrote me a really sweet note and there was shark confetti and a tattoo for [info]getaway_machine and shark fruit snacks!! i love jenny & her mom, haha.)

julia nunes tunes 01 (zip file of mp3s). contains the following songs (all ripped from youtube):

01. a welcome vacation (original)
02. alive with the glory of love (by say anything)
03. august (original)
04. balloons (original)
05. build me up buttercup (by...whoever. i feel like i should know this.)
06. bye bye bye (by nsync. and also, stop making that face and listen to the damn song.)
07. eleanor rigby (by the beatles)
08. first day of my life (by bright eyes)
09. first impressions (original)
10. flagpole sitta (by harvey danger)
11. god only knows (by the beach boys)
12. gone (by ben folds)
13. her majesty (bare) (by the beatles. this is the version with just one vocal track.)
14. her majesty (full) (by the beatles. this is the version from the beginning of the video.)

i've cut out almost all of the talking (except where i really really like it and can't imagine the song without it) and normalized the volumes and put in id3 tags and whatnot.

if you like these, you should really seriously please check out her youtube account (or [info]julianunes) because she is crazy adorable and funny and i love her to pieces. you should also consider going to her myspace and buying her music or going to her shows.

oh and the quick facts: she just finished her freshman year of college; she mostly plays the ukulele; she also plays the guitar, melodica, piano, and tissue box; she is seriously adorable; and she achieved internet fame for these things.

because i don't love enough indie ny girl singers already. sigh.

dark knight was jfhueids AWESOME, dr. horrible was funny, moving is a pain in the ass (not that i have even begun packing or anything yet), etc etc. but mostly the news from last week is that i am in love with this girl.

her name is julia nunes, and she is young and adorable and really damn talented and i just love her so much. i have watched all of her videos kind of a lot in the past week? i think my favorites of her original songs are into the sunshine, first impressions, and short and sweet. my favorites of her covers are woe (by say anything), gone (by ben folds), underdog (by spoon), and jesus walks (by kanye west). although srsly you guys, i love them all. a lot.

JESUS IS LISTENING.

this afternoon, while driving home and listening to some really embarassing music from my past, i was thinking about MUCH LESS embarassing music from my past. (not that that's hard, as i was listening to dashboard confessional. and also shut up.) ANYWAY, i literally said out loud "i would really like to see the queers play! it is too fucking bad that they never play outside of nyc anymore, the bastards."

AND YET, i went to the social's website tonight and THEY ARE PLAYING HERE THE DAY AFTER MY BIRTHDAY! hduifhudifh YOU GUYS!!!!! this show has so much potential to be absolutely terrible, BUT I AM DEFINITELY GOING ANYWAY. weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

-I'm kind of really excited for The Dark Knight. Have I mentioned that? I think I have. Anyway, it looks completely awesome. And now they have put it side-by-side with the trailer for Batman (one of the movies that defined my whole childhood) and YOU GUYS, SO GOOD.

-Bess Rogers live acoustic podcast thing! Audio only, AND video!

-We watched The Day After Tomorrow yesterday, and that meant I had to go reread This is the Way One World Ends and cry like a damn baby.

-Can you guys believe I've been in Orlando for a year? (Not a link.) More importantly, can you guys believe that Sirius Black has been officially DEAD for a year? (Still not a link.) How about that HP has been done for a year? Doesn't it feel like longer? (Not a-- Oh fuck it.) Maybe living with Ashley is like dog years or something.

-Now we are going to get drunk and make Amy watch Waterworld. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

01. if you are as in love as i am, you should probably be reading [info]joy_tumblr and [info]bess_tumblr. jenny posts random snippets, and bess posts a lot of tour videos. both are awesome, obvs. (or you could read their actual tumblrs, but this is easier.)

02. "name that tune" is one of those game shows that i know i could kick ass on. it's just one of those completely useless talents that i possess! so i've been playing this game, which is basically "name that tune" with british bands from about the '60s to today. my record so far is 14:58 (to name five songs).

03. the modest mouse show was decent. not really what i was expecting, but not a total disappointment. probably wouldn't go see them again, at least not while hipsters still walk the earth. (ashley and i did come up with the best idea ever while there though, so that counts for something!)

04. this list of the 100 greatest rock songs of all time is making me and my mom really cranky. how did guns n' roses beat neil young? TWICE? mom thinks we should write our own list and put it online so that people can learn The Truth. i have a feeling we will just get into an argument about bruce springsteen and like, no doubt. heh.

05. so, brick does free concerts every thursday all summer. i used to go all the time, and it was just a lot of washed up disco / old people music, cos my town is filled with old people. except this year, apparently they are getting rock cover bands! including a beatles cover band and a LED ZEPPELIN COVER BAND! i am INSANELY jealous :(

06. i am INSANELY in love with this (partial) cover of "voice on tape" by dan romer and bess rogers. apparently snippets of jenny songs on youtube make me discover new artists though, cos now i am in love with dan romer! he's such a weirdo, it's fantastic.

-the ingrid shows were great. we saw her at park ave cds and then at the social. she played two new songs at park ave that we really dug ("the chain" and "be okay"), and then we got her to sign our copies of billboard and she maybe implied that we were stalkers? greg laswell opened for her at the social, and he was good, but only had one song that i really liked. he was super-funny and charming though, which is half the battle. ingrid's set was awesome. she played both new songs, and "giving up" (which i have been mildly obsessed with), and she did the first remixed verse of "the way i am" (SO FUNNY OMG), and was generally charming and funny and fantastic. i've seen her three times now, and she has yet to repeat a joke. i am SUPER-impressed. (and i've watched a nauseating amount of youtube bootlegs this week, so i can actually tell you that she does not often repeat stories in general.) i've been trying to settle on a version of "the chain" to download, and so far this one is winning, although i'm still hoping the version from our show goes up cos she pulled this fantastic girl out of the audience to sing with them and it was awesome. here's the best version of "be okay" so far.

-the cassandra clare book was good, but not life-changing or anything. i'm holding off on the sequel for as long as i can, cos it's bulky. i'm reading feast of fools now instead (YES, without a full reread! so far, no confusion.) and you guys, i love rachel caine's writing a lot.

-my brother is getting married! crazyness, i know. when did i get old enough to have a sister-in-law? yikes. but anyway, family trip to vegas in november, yay! (yeah, they're getting married in vegas at an elvis chapel. heh.)

where did tuesday go?
[btvs] smoochies!

i feel like i lost a day this week. i leave tomorrow night and i am incredibly unprepared. at least i have a duffle bag now? (it's pink.) (i am trying to make plans for saturday night without actually committing myself to anything in case i get a better offer. cos certain friends trump other friends, but i'd rather hanging out with a low-ranked friend than nobody. SO COMPLICATED. and everyone is too spread out for me to just pick a bar and tell everyone to show up. MURRR.)

anyway, i finished forbidden game today. i can't believe i read this entire trilogy for the "tunnel of love & despair" scene, but i did. it wasn't even as good as i remembered it being! i liked julian a lot more than i remembered liking him though. don't worry- i still hated tom. fucking boys named tom.

that means i'm on valiant now. yet another fucking boy named tom! it's like a goddamn epidemic. (tom: my anti-dan?)

and after this i have about ten books i want to reread, but i am out of reread points!! you guys, i don't know what to doooooooo.

at work today, i found out that one of my favorite decorators is actually married to possibly my least favorite decorator. WTF! and he didn't even say hello to me! this show would have been made of fail if i hadn't had two silly electricians keeping me entertained. (one of them was like "lisa, do girls like flowers? what about chocolates? WHAT KIND? and what do i do if this fails to make her love me?" oh electrician, i am SO the wrong girl to be asking!)

i have been listening to andrew bird's bowl of fire on repeat all week. oh god i wish i had an actual cd! i am quite smitten.
