ok, finished tangled webs. we've got an email thread going about it, so i doubt i'll be talking about it in any depth here, but basically: underwhelming. especially after rereading dreams made flesh, which was such an excellent continuation of the world.

plus, i think it's the weather or something, but i'm really anxious to get away from the fantasy and move back to straight fiction for a bit. so up next: it's kind of a funny story by ned vizzini. i adored his last book (teen angst? naaah: a quasi-autobiography) when i read it all those years ago. he's only a couple of years older than me, and i could really relate to it. i heard about this one in 2006, and it sounded like exactly the book i needed to read at the time. actually, its mere existence made me feel better about life. anyway, it's obviously taken me a while to bring it to the front of the queue, but i'm still pretty excited for it.

after this though, i've got a couple of fantasy books about fairies in the tri-state area. unless we've got the_ideal_life going, in which case i don't know what i'll be reading. oh and i think i'm buying my mum a book for mother's day (girls like us: carole king, joni mitchell, carly simon--and the journey of a generation by sheila weller, maybe) so i'll probably order a couple for myself, too.

tangled webs has been pretty underwhelming (and i'm not done, so take your spoilers and stick 'em where the sun don't shine), but this exchange has made the whole book worth it:

i think the best part about my current black jewels reread is the awesome discussion we've got going on at bjt_fan. yeah, that's right! people who i don't even know are discussing the books with me! it's like an actual fandom, you guys. (uh, minus the wank. so far. heh.)

finished the dark is rising sequence by susan cooper. want to see movie now. only really liked the dark is rising though. and maybe greenwitch. i mean, the first one was pretty freaking dull, and while i really liked bran, the welsh stuff was annoying cos i don't actually speak welsh.

also also: reading classic kid's fantasy gives me such a thrill cos i can see where my favorite authors took their influences from. i love that kind of thing!

also also also: i read my first digital book yesterday, and holy jesus you guys I HATED IT! SO! MUCH! which is weird cos i LOVE reading on my computer. i love the internet and fic and journals and emails and all of that. but reading the novel was just terrible. (did i read the last lkh book on my computer? i can't remember. and i don't think that counts anyway, cos i hated reading it period.) it was one of the least satisfying reading experiences of my life, including that time i attempted dickens for fun. i feel like i would have enjoyed the book more if i had had a, you know, a book, but i didn't, so oh well.

anyway, now i'm finally doing my bjt reread (starting with the invisible ring) so YAY. this one kind of sucks, but the rest make me deliriously happy.

i have two job interviews tomorrow, at an advertising place and a temp agency. cross your fingers and hope for a lack of scams, k? and also hope for a lack of getting lost, since i only set up the interviews today and have therefore not driven to either place ahead of time, awesome. (one is in, um, maitland, and the other one is off of i drive (which means there is about a 30 minute drive for each trip, according to mapquest), and i am going right from one to the other, so there is a good chance of getting lost. sigh.)

otherwise, i'm still just reading weather warden and trying to ignore the internet. except, okay, i will say one tiny thing: this is the best post i have read about this entire thing, and it is the first post i've read that hasn't made me want to stab fandom in the face, which is probably because comments are locked. oh, i guess that's two things. here's a third, as an added bonus: efw is, for all intents and purposes, an rp comm, so untwist your goddamn panties and stop yelling about people judging your posts without looking at the intent behind them until you can offer the same courtesy to others. honestly, i have never in my life been ashamed for being in fandom until i read the comments to that post. and now i'm done, and i don't particularly want to discuss this, especially with anyone who is currently foaming at the mouth. (also, thank god for getaway_machine, who for some reason tolerates me yelling at my computer and then bursting into the living room while going off on a long tirade about how much i hate ____________.)

oh, so a while ago i promised simplykatie a peek inside my WIPs folder, cos i let ashley look at a bunch of it at the ootp premiere. and now there's this meme going around, so i'm just gonna do that instead? (katia, you can still rummage through it when you get here, cos i'm not posting everything.)

When you see this, post a little weensy excerpt from as many random works-in-progress as you can find lying around. Who knows? Maybe inspiration will burst forth and do something, um, inspiration-y.

while waiting in line, i made a breakthrough on a fic i've been writing for a really long time. i think i actually have the why of the story all figured out, so now i just need to actually write the rest of the story. unfortunately, the rest of the story is filled with penises and i have no patience for that sort of thing (as a writer. and as a human, i guess) so this could take a while. at least i've satisfied my own curiosity by figuring out why daemon is so goddamn furious?

i started reading the amber series by roger zelazny. that may or may not be spelt wrong. anyway, i am really enjoying it so far. and not just cos it's about a bunch of brothers who are fighting each other to the death but secretly love each other? um. also, there is one named random and i love him.

got the new abvh comic today, and the hardcover thing. why does first death's art blow so badly? and ( casting spoilers! ) as an added bonus, the new "story" in the hardcover thing is a horribly drawn, horribly written, inane, worthless piece of shit. SRSLY, who thought (a) that was an interesting story, and/or (b) that story was worth all the advertising they've given it? because i would like to punch that person in the face.

there is also some artwork inside the hardcover thing that i sort of love, but who needs cool art when anita's teeth are so big that she can't close her mouth?

AND WHILE I'M RAGING IN LKH'S GENERAL DIRECTION! on june 4th, she said she couldn't wait for the book to be released and for everyone to read it so she could talk about some edward stuff in her blog and it is over a month later and there is nothing about edward! haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate!

last but certainly not least, ashley and i are halfway through season two of buffy. the proper reaction to the first angelus/buffy scene is hysterical laughter, right? heh. also, OZ. our love for him is kind of outrageous!

Office Space (HP, ron/draco) is not a yuletide fic, but it is from some similar thing, so it can get thrown in here. also, it is FANTASTIC. omg. it is post-war, funny, hot, touching, and just. it is *so* my ron and draco and ron/draco and everything else- the details, and the minor characters, and just everything, i love it so much, and even if you don't like ron/draco (getaway_machine, i am looking at you!) i think you should read this because the characterization is awesome. and also, you should like ron/draco. heh.

Shaphire Shadows (BJT, wilhemina, gen) is about wilhemina coming into her own, which is a sort of story i am coming to like quite a bit.

Debriefing (BJT, surreal, gen) is all about dark!surreal, which i think is such a fantastic selling point that i can just stop talking!

Twas the Night Before Winsol (BJT, wilhemina, karla) is so totally karla that i can't help but love it. also: oh khary. hee. it has some interesting character dynamics, and possibly my favorite quote about karla ever: "[Wilhemina] suddenly understood what Jaenelle had meant when she'd said that Karla in a bad mood was terrifying but Karla in a good mood was irresistible."

i am kind of sad that i am now out of bjt fic to read, but i really have no one to blame for that but myself. sigh.

(HEY SO GUESS WHAT. christmas is over, and the store was so dead tonight that in addition to goofing around, i was able to begin reading a book. !!!! i think i am going to really enjoy winter. heh.)

ALSO: there is a new ab:vh comic tomorrow! which means we are approximately ONE MONTH AWAY from my edward comic. prepare for levels of flailing never before seen on this journal!

according to my brothers and cousins, it is not normal to ask for reference books for christmas and then, upon receiving them, immediately plop yourself down in front of the tree and begin reading them. which i guess makes me abnormal. which i guess is not too surprising.

(i did not get a unicorn, at all, which makes me kind of sad. i DID get a pink mp3 player though! and a sweet reference book. and my parents got tivo, which is almost as good as me getting tivo! also, i felt like i did really good with buying presents this year, which made giving them a lot more fun. who would've thunk it?)


HEY how about some fic recs? i am reading sporadically and vaguely by fandom, in case you were curious.

After the Rain (BJT, daemon&surreal, gen) is pretty much spot-on for the daemon&surreal relationship for me. i have been spending a lot of time lately thinking about how needy daemon is, and so this was just perfect and i love it.

Everybody Knows (Boy Meets World, corey/shawn, corey/topenga) is so in character that you will think you are watching an improbable episode of the show. the mannerisms and characterization were just SO. PERFECT. oh corey. hee.

A Matter of Choice (Dark Visions, gabriel, gen) gets inside gabriel's head so well. he is one of those angsty bad boys who i think is kind of overrated, but then i'll read something that will make me fall in love with him all over again. this is that something.

Maggie's Kitchen (AB:VH, there is some anita/jc but mostly i would call this gen) has a MYSTERY and is very much in anita's voice. and also there is edward. that is never not good :D also, the idea of jc hiring edward to keep an eye on anita is now possibly my favorite bit of fanon ever.

This post is mostly to let people know that I'm heading down to Atlantic City for a few days cos it's Hita's birthday (and then Joey's, and then Sheena's, and then Bel's, which seriously, how are there so many birthdays this week?) and she needs a drinking partner. Assuming this birthday celebration does not end the way our last one ended, I'll be back sometime Thursday.

So that this post is not entirely content-free though, I have a fic rec! Dusk Descending (BJT, Wilhemina gen, g). It's about Wilhemina leaving home and coming into her power and her voice is just perfect. I'm really excited to read the sequel, but it has to wait! Woe.

and i was thinking about uploading various videos on my comp to youtube. various btvs and firefly things, a few olp things, and about 45 things of the lotr boys. would there be any interest in this sort of thing? a lot of it's probably up there (i'll do some searches when i'm less exhausted) but like, prophecy girl outtakes or the unaired pilot? or the original firefly gagreel? or the super-awesome promo with billy and dom that this icon is from? these things should all be available to the world at large. *g* (the other night, i was visiting my grandmother and uploading music for her. we were listening to elvis. i only tolerate him for her, heh. anyway, she started to tell me about one of his movies and how the scene with this song was so awesome so i went to youtube and found it in about two seconds and she was all "INTERNET I LOVE YOU!" it was amusing.)

so, all i really learned from yesterday's poll is that fandom is pretty closely divided on things. but, seriously, how did ma petite get nearly twice as many votes as anita? that one's *canon*! (anita says in pretty much every book that jc called her anita, which means she knows he's serious, and it's at that point that she actually listens to him. maybe it was the wording of my poll. hm.) for this reason, i no longer trust my clearly scientific livejournal research center. but i did find some new bjt people! hooray! i'll probably do something about a comm this weekend, so i'm still open to name suggestions. right now all i've got is crazyfree_bjt, which would be accurate, but might freak out new people ;)

I've decided that I really do want a fandom, and that I'll never get one if I sit around and let the morons over at anne_bishop_fan keep running things with their "fic is teh ev0l zomg!!1!" attitudes (which, yeah, they adopted from Anne Bishop, but what-the-fuck-ever).

The first step is pimping it out. So, if you have not read The Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop, I don't want to be your friend anymore. Just kidding! Sort of. Seriously, this is one of the best 'verses I've experienced. The characters are amazing, the brothers MAKE OUT (Ok, they don't really, because one of them stops the other one and is all "I'm not gay anymore!" BUT WE CAN PRETEND.) and all the guys are super-sexy. The girls are actually funny and real and also very hot. If you've never read any of the posts in which I flail over these books, then you clearly don't pay any attention to me and you're probably not even reading this. blkjwldgds pimped the books to me, I pimped them to 3/5ths of Randy, they pimped them to their friends, etc etc. But I need more people so that I don't have to IM getaway_machine and simplykatie all the time with questions such as "Do you think Daemon and Lucivar had sex before they knew they were brothers? And if so, did they stop once they found out?" (The answers are yes and no, in that order.)

The books are straight-up fantasy. They are set in another world (or three). There is magic. There are lots of bad people. There is HONOR, which I think is the sexiest thing ever. There's plenty of sex. There are slaves, if you're into that sort of thing. There's a lot of snark from certain characters. There are kick-ass animals. There is one speech that will break your heart every goddamn time you read it. There is, without a doubt, the best extended family ever. And there are also two very sexy, very honorable, very...I don't even have the word for it...brothers who are totally gay for each other. There are three books in the trilogy (Daughter of the Blood, Heir to the Shadows, and Queen of the Darkness). There is another novel set in the same 'verse, but earlier than the trilogy (The Invisible Ring, and yes, one of the hot brothers is in it). There is a book of short stories (Dreams Made Flesh) that totally makes me wibble. And there's another short story ("The Price") that I haven't read yet, but which Ashley said was good.

The only problem is the lack of a fandom. Anne Bishop is against fic and RPGs because she's all "I might write more in this 'verse and I don't want you little snots stealing my stories." Which, shut up, Anne Bishop. To remedy this, me and getaway_machine and sky_was_green and simplykatie try to write fic and talk and flail and generally obsess about these books whenever we can. I've even written PORN. Male/male, incest-y, penis-filled porn. (I'm still waiting for getaway_machine to beta it, so if you really want it, feel free to harass/insult her.)

And I made an entry at The Directorium about the books, which can be found here and which is very unfinished, so please either go edit it or tell me what to add. I'm thinking about making an archive for BJT fic, but the problem is that once the assholes in the fandom find out about it they will report it to Anne Bishop who will, I don't know, send a C&D or rabid monkeys after me. There is fic at fanfiction.net though, under either Dark Jewels or Misc, I forget. I might write something for idol_reflection or ship_manifesto too.

Basically, you should join this fandom, even if you don't like incest. I promise there are plenty of non-incestuous relationships to 'ship, and the whole thing is awesome, and uh, the books make me really incredibly happy. So read them. :)

considering how often i reread the prologue to daughter of the blood, you'd think i would have it memorized by now, but no, i still need to look something up in it every single time i try to write bjt fic.

on the plus side, i figured out what's going on in the winsol story! and i wrote it down this time so i won't forget in ten minutes just like the last time i figured it out!

i need some bjt icons, man. so maybe i'll try to finish this, send it off to my favorite person ever, and make some icons for us instead of going to a party tonight.

also, this song always makes me think of mercy, pity, peace. and, randomly, so did grey's anatomy last week, when mere imagined mcdreamy talking to her. that was the part that made me cry, because i was sad for REMUS. how pathetic is that?
