Holiday Brakes
[info]pbackwriterfeed
Time seems to move too fast these days, doesn't it? I swear, the kids just went back to school; I blinked and suddenly it was Halloween. Thanksgiving -- a day that for me has always been a nonstop celebration of food and family and fun -- was a flash this year. If I hadn't cooked all day I would have sworn we microwaved Thanksgiving.

Now the Christmas holidays are coming at me, and while I know I still have 24 days to finish my preparations, I suspect it's going to be more like 24 minutes. And then it'll be 2010, my baby will be driving (oh, yes. She's studying now to get her learner's permit at the end of the month) and I have a feeling the last few dark hairs on my head will be turning snowy.

Everyone is busy beyond the usual busy. My guy has so much work to do with his job in retail I've just cleared the next three weeks for him to come and go as needed, otherwise I might not see him again until January. At present my own work schedule is completely filled until March 16th. The kids have penciled in so much school and friend festivities on the calendar page for December that I had to start scheduling pickup and dropoff times. I've been asking people to call before they stop by during December to first make sure that we're even here.

There are things that do put the breaks on my warp-speed reality, such as waiting to see a doctor, shopping at malls, and wrapping packages, all of which take almost forever; my weekly physical therapy (forever plus a nice big side order of sweat and pain) and trying to talk to someone who isn't a robot at the mobile phone company (press one for service, press three if you have questions about your bill, press five if you are too stupid to use our automated FAQ service, press nine if we're driving you insane, etc.)

But there are good things that slow me down, too. When I write I forget about time until the stop-writing alarm clock goes off. Sewing, baking, listening to music, taking long walks with the pup and sitting by the fire with my guy have a nice timeless quality to them, too. Going out to photograph a sunrise or sunset. Hanging out with the kids and their friends on a Sunday. Going for a drive in the country to no place in particular. Game nights, when I shut off the TV, the computers and all the other electronics and take out the chess board, Scrabble or Monopoly.

I also read articles like Managing Your Holiday Stress to help cope with mine. I think I'm doing okay. I start working on my Christmas shopping lists in July so that once December arrives I don't have to live at the malls. I've been working extra hours to get all my contract work completed by next week, but I've also been taking time to do things like the NaNoNovel to keep my creative batteries charged. I also try to keep a sense of humor about all the things that can and will go wrong (my daughter is calling this Christmas CookieFail; I've been testing new recipes but so far every one of them has sucked.) And hard as it is, I accept that there are some things I'll have to gift bag instead of wrap, gift card instead of choose myself, and store-buy instead of hand-make.

The holidays will probably still fly by as fast as everything else has in 2009, but now and then I hope I remember to put on the brakes. It's the only way to get off the crazy train and spend an hour or an afternoon or an evening simply enjoying the reason we all work so hard this time of year: family and friends.

So what are you guys doing to combat the holiday rush? Have any really good tips to share? Let us know in comments.

LF PC recommendations PST...
[info]tisoi wrote in [info]worldofwarcraft
I'm looking to purchase a new desktop PC. And I want to make sure that it can handle WoW over the next couple of years. I have a 4 year old computer that ran WoW smoothly (though not perfectly) from Jan. 2008 until patch 3.2 hit.

I know about the recommended system requirements from the web page, however, I'm looking for personal recommendations especially where HP computers are concerned. I might be considering a laptop as well (any brand).

Thanks!

Fans Come Down On New Moon's 22 (And Counting) Mistakes

Just because New Moon was one of the biggest films of all time doesn't mean it's perfect. Twilight fans are cataloguing the film's many on-screen errors. We've picked our favorites, and suggested a few of our own.

Right now the fans have identified 22 flaws, and counting. We've listed a few funny ones below, but we'd like to contribute some mind-benders of our own. First, the impossibility that is Jacob's transformation to a dog 4 times his size, where does this extra matter go or come from! Also his magic shattering clothes I wish all clothes burst into bits like that. Plus the jean-shorts conundrum. Why are these jean shorts always around — don't they shatter too? Is there some cave in the forest stocked with jean shorts so the werepuppies can slip them on after a fight? We may never know.

an announcement from nicole richie
[info]amore wrote in [info]ohnotheydidnt

I am so excited to announce that I am officially working on a television project! I am creating a half hour scripted comedy for ABC in which I will be starring in, as well as producing.

The series revolves around a young, modern and professional woman who must balance her business and family relationships. She must deal with, and navigate the many ideas of what a woman’s role is: modern vs. traditional.

Lately, I have been surrounded by many different women of all ages and walks of life. It amazes me to watch and observe how many different ideas there are about what a woman’s role should be in this era. I’ve taken these fascinating ideas, and compiled them into something that I think will be very special (and funny!). We’re still in the very early stages and I can’t wait to share more with you soon!

Hello

Looking for a fic where everyone seems to think Rodney is a grinch at christmas time but he's really in his little workshop making them all awesome presents. Teyla knows this and helps him deliver all the presents one night and then everyone feels guilty.

Any help appreciated :)

Lorne/Weir
[info]katiebgood wrote in [info]sgastoryfinders
I could swear that I've seen a sequel to "And All We Have" that's Lorne/Weir- he approaches her to join the family unit he has going with Zelenka and Miko and someone else. Sadly my googlefu is lacking. But it might have been a commentfic, or a completely different story, I don't know. What I do remember is that she was horribly lonely, and Lorne had, up to when he (very gently) asked her to join them, been very discreet about his interest.

The 33-year-old model picked up groceries for his family - longtime love Halle Berry and their adorable daughter Nahla.
Halle, who’s debuting her new fragrance Halle by Halle Berry, told OK! that her new fragrance is an extension of her personality.
“As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become more in touch with my sexuality,” Halle said.
“I feel more free, and I like expressing it. I love this fragrance because it’s very sensual, sexy and playful, on top of being exotic and fruity.”

Starman: Interview with Duncan Jones (Bowie's son)
[info]highrising wrote in [info]ohnotheydidnt

http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/2428/duncan500.jpg
Duncan Jones is rock royalty. His birth inspired his father, David Bowie, to write the song Kooks for his 1971 album, Hunky Dory.

He spent childhood holidays on Mustique with the young Stella McCartney and Jade Jagger. But Duncan, now 38, has always had an uneasy relationship with fame. “I would love my work to be well known but I've always wanted to make a name in my own right.”

While other celebrity offspring end up falling out of nightclubs at 4am, Jones doesn't drink or smoke. “I like to be in control of my own head.” For years he was an eternal student. Even after he went to film school in his late twenties and became a commercials director (he directed French Connection's infamous “Kung-fu lesbian advert” in 2006), he refused to borrow his father's stage name of Bowie.

But now Jones, nominated one of the Evening Standard's 1,000 most influential Londoners,is going to have to get used to the limelight. His debut film Moon has been hailed as the most original sci-fi movie in years. It was lauded by The New York Times. It won the Michael Powell award for best British debut at Edinburgh, and has picked up seven British independent film nominations (including Best Director for Jones and Best Actor for its star, Sam Rockwell). There are Oscar rumours.
